Your either going to love this or hate it, there simply is no compromised middle ground with this completely unhinged, ethereal take on corporate manipulation and slavery, class prejudices and racial perceptions.The middle of the film has a very sluggish pace, but there's enough of the story to keep people interested to find out what happens in the end. Because so much of Vivarium is repetitive ... the movie probably would've been better as a short film.

While the performances of Katie Holmes, Derek Luke, Patricia Clarkson, Oliver Platt, Alison Pill ensure that the movie is always watchable, the hesitant storytelling makes it far from compelling, a bad trip about a bummer vacation. Although the sharp sense of humor is only one step away from being laugh-out-loud hilarious, this is a smart absurdist satire on conformism and modern alienation that couldn't feel more realistic even as it confidently moves towards surrealism in ways that are quite unexpected.
